Map of the twenty satellite-tagged California Brown pelicans. Click on the markers to learn more about each bird.

The map is automatically updated about every 3 days and shows the tracks of the birds during the last 10 days. At the top of the map you will see a small calendar. You can select a date to see specific locations on that day (round markers). Pelicans that were oiled during the oil spill and were rehabilitated by OWCN are shown with a filled circle; control birds are shown with an open circle, in hues of blue.

The satellite tags we use are solar-powered Argos-GPS tags weighing about 70 grams, made by GeoTrak. They record GPS locations every 1.5 hours and communicate the stored locations to a satellite every 3 days. This means that some pelicans may not appear to move for three days.
